San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) currently provides plastic utensils. We aim to phase out single-use plastics that come with SDUSD meals. We are vetting biodegradable utensil options and communicating with food services about pricing, student buy-in, and efforts at other schools.

What's our alternative?
Potatoware
Utensil cutlery that is made from potato and plant starches. It is a biodegradable option that has a similar texture and durability to typical plastic forks and spoons. It is also cost effective, as shown below:

The majority of students use utensils for school meals, whether they eat school lunch or bring food from home.
Students prefer school lunches that do not require utensils.
Most students do not bring their own utensils because of convenience.
When using utensils, students prioritize sturdiness and convenience.
