Madison Recycling

At Madison high school, we've made it our mission to implement sustainability into our daily campus life. The engineering students launched a recycling initiative!

Project Steps

Challenges

Our challenges we are facing at Madison High School is students are not recycling properly. Recycling bins are filled with unrecycled trash and left over food while trash cans are also filled with recyclable items and fluids from drinks.

Engineering Design Brief

Our Engineering Design Brief is to implement new design to our recycle bins around our school campus. We plan to improve our way of recycling in our school

Student Surveys

We obtained feedback on student opinions regarding the importance of recycling and design ideas for interactive bins.

Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry is a technique to scan objects and create 3D models. We are implementing photogrammetry into our project by scanning models of cartoon and video game characters

Product Design

We followed our engineering design brief, which included a list of constraints, budget, and requirements. Our overall design includes a clear frame, informational graphics, and characters that students wanted to see on campus.

Final Product

This step is still in progress with a tentative launch date of 2024.

Is it working? Data Monitoring

Actions:

While working on our improved recycling bins, we surveyed students and made a push to encourage participation across campus. (View the images above, titled "Details for each step").

We began conversations across campus just before winter break, December 18th, 2023.

Upon returning from break, we saw increased student engagement with recycling, as seen in the following figures

Evidence:

Recycling is collected from 8 blue bins on campus daily by the Circle of Friends club. Once there is enough recycling to bring to the recycling center, a trip is made. Data was obtained from club records, where dates, weight, and payment were recorded.

Figure 1 demonstrates the magnitude of change in recycling participation.

Figure 2 shows the average weight (lbs) and income ($) of recycling collected per week.
